that being said, exclusives are only like 5% of a consoles library.

Yes, but because the other 95% of games tend to overlap, the exclusives assume a disproportionate amount of value in terms of distinguishing consoles. After all, what you're essentially deciding when you pick a console (assuming you only plan to buy one) is which 5% you can't play, not which 95% you can play.

This was essentially why I skipped the PS3 completely last gen - from my perspective, the choice basically came down to whether or not I was more interested in playing Halo or playing Uncharted, and Halo (and thus the 360) won. Afterwards, the 95% they shared in common discouraged me from ever buying a PS3, because I didn't feel a NEED to. Ironically, the fact that the PS4 seemed to be getting better exclusives (like Horizon: Zero Dawn) while the entire Halo franchise sucks now did the reverse this gen, where I picked up the PS4 and ignored the Xbox One because I already felt like the PS4 was fulfilling all of my needs.

It's also the reason why I shifted from the SNES to the PS1 in that generational shift and have literally never owned another Nintendo console again - the PS1 was packed to the brim with the sort of exclusive games I wanted to play (specifically Final Fantasy at the time), while the N64 had literally nothing I cared about.

In your scenario you're not motivated by the exclusives as much as you are by which consoles your friends are buying, but that essentially means that either they are being swayed by exclusives (when deciding which consoles to buy as a group), or they're just maintaining blind brand loyalty (and just sticking with Microsoft because that's what they've always played on).
