He accidentally thought of his daughter while seeing Ellie beg for his life.~~ Yeah, I saw that too. But the idea that he just put the watch Sarah gave him in an unremarkable shoe box instead of always taking it with him like he has been before this game, and the fact that Ellie just puts it aside instead of cherishing it for Joel's sake essentially means the writers forgot Sarah and tossed her aside, ignoring the very reason Joel and Ellie's story began.
