The whole time I played the first I was just thinking "why I'm I doing this to myself. I could be playing a good stealth game like Splinter Cell"

I think it's fine if people don't like the story, or outright hate it, but many feel that because they feel negatively about its narrative, that means that it's bad.

That's your problem then, because my issues with the story have zero relations to being LGBQT+ or muscular women or any of that. The transphobic stuff was way heavy handed and not at all handled correctly, but the big issues are the plot just fucking sucks. It was great until the midway point when it wanted me to try and care for someone I literally could never care about, no matter how hard they tried to shove it in my face. It was pathetic and condescending. The rationale and conveniences of the plot are absurd. The entire ending section is so pointless and useless that it just felt like dumb padding and did nothing but butcher a character.

Fuck that game. They could have done it a million other ways to be better but they chose the worst possible one.

I remember after the first came out, it was considered a perfect standalone game that didn't need a sequel.

From what I've played of 2 so far (maybe 1/3 or so), I agree.

I don't think so.

people that have played through the game, and have enjoyed it, tend to like its story, from my experience.

there are those who might like its gameplay, presentation, etc., but not like its story, but since the narrative is so intertwined to the experience, it's less likely that you'd enjoy your time with it unless if you skipped through cutscenes...but there are still a lot of walking parts and dialogue outside of cutscenes

Agreed. The first games story was just a cliched mess and the characters weren't interesting or likeable. The gameplay was boring and clunky, so I quit early on. Luckily, the second game improved the gameplay aspects dramatically. The gameplay was compelling enough that I finished it and enjoyed it.

I think that started when people complained about Ellie being lesbian, people calling Abby trans, people complaining about how you can't shoot Jewish religious symbols, calling the game "SJW", "woke", etc.

if someone was like, "I don't like this game because..." and they give legitimate complaints, it would be another matter entirely

Theres a lot of contrived stuff, like how ellie decides not to kill Abby after killing all those people to get ther and having her bite her fingers off or Joel letting his guard down around Abby (who he came into contact around by pure chance) despite how much it goes against his character.

Someone else could likely articulate it better than me.

that's not really contrived, though.

Ellie knew by killing Abby, she'd either have to kill Lev or save him - if she killed him, someone who she viewed as an innocent, and someone who she her life to (as well as Dina's and JJ's), she would have really lost herself. and if she saved him, she knew that the cycle of violence would have continued

and as far as Abby finding Joel goes, she was already heading out to Jackson, and she found Joel and Tommy's tracks, so she was tracking them, and the two already said they'd be heading out to deal with roaming packs, iirc. and Tommy was the one who gave up their names

It boggles my mind how people hate on TLOU writers telling their story with little interference, but defend Star Wars ST known for corporate meddling, focus groups, trying to appeal to the masses, and discarding the original creators story outline.

I didn't mind the story of 2 too much, but they asked a LOT from players. From a constantly depressing atmosphere, to even more gruesome violence and gore than the first game had, to forcing you to play as a character painted as the villain for quite literally half the game. It's a ballsy maneuver, especially with some of the false advertising, but I appreciated it. I understand why a lot of people wouldn't, though.

I do have a problem with Ellie being boring and not acting like how she was in the first game, and Sarah essentially being tossed aside, though. Joel could've used better characterization though, he became too much of a softy between games. It's literally what got him killed, after all.

Overall, the environments and gameplay are much better in 2, but I enjoyed the story more in 1.

Joel, in his golf-punch-drunk delirium, was originally supposed to say "Sarah" in his last breath. I take this is as canon. He accidentally thought of his daughter while seeing Ellie beg for his life.

Yeah, I saw that too.

But the idea that he just put the watch Sarah gave him in an unremarkable shoe box instead of always taking it with him like he has been before this game, and the fact that Ellie just puts it aside instead of cherishing it for Joel's sake essentially means the writers forgot Sarah and tossed her aside, ignoring the very reason Joel and Ellie's story began. Whether they intended to or not...it kinda sucks.
