With a lot of other furniture, it's not too hard to find quality (or at least make sure it's quality) at a lower price because used furniture is a thing. It's a lot harder with mattresses.

I bought my current mattress off Amazon for $100 a year ago. It came in the mail, you unrolled it and it expanded into a full sized and comfortable queen mattress (first time in 20 years I didn't have a king sized one, all my sheets are too big).

My wife was a princess, so I bought very expensive king sized mattresses in the past, up until she was in a hospital bed (and I just used the king myself). This mattress has been just as comfortable and WAY cheaper, easier to get etc.

So yeah, mattresses are too expensive because you can get just as comfortable ones WAY cheaper online.

Your average bed-in-a-box isn't going to last you all that long. You'd be lucky to get 3-4 good years out of it. Even a cheaper knock-off like a Bob-o-pedic, which is several steps above a bed-in-a-box, often won't get you 5 good years. I think my brother's went to crap in under 3 years.

It's not that you can't find mattresses for $300 or less, it's more that they won't be great mattresses.

And, as a general side-note, my cousin -- who this year might clear $100k at a job where his salary should have been about $50k -- has an inflatable mattress he keeps with him because he every 30 days or so he checks into a new AirBnB and he doesn't like the mattress. (As for why he just hops between AirBnBs, the guy is cheap as fuck -- he lives on under $600/month, so he could easily live on minimum wage while still saving if he wanted.)

Great freaking mattress.

I'm familiar with the mattress, it's a low-end foam mattress that generally doesn't hold up.
