I lived in Raleigh for a time during my childhood, and liked it a lot. I definitely want to visit again someday and would consider living there. It's becoming a fashionable city for younger folks, but this growth hasn't accelerated as quickly as Charlotte - making it more affordable at the moment.
Not to mention Charlotte is a little soul less in my experience. Raleigh has some culture going on.

Oh baby. This is my rec if you want a super hippie small mountain city in NC with a lot of fun stuff to do.
