They have literally been used interchangeably since as far back as Ancient Greece. Its not until the mid 20th century give or take that people started using gender more since sex started to mean less about gender and more often referred to fucking. Then it wasn't until the last five or so years that a very small minority of people started pushing the concept that sex and gender are two separate things.
