I don't think it was OK. I'm not aware of any federal or state law that requires ordinary citizens to actively search for and report potentially counterfeit money. Any time people interact with police--whether you are suspected of wrongdoing or not--they are inviting possible trouble. It is standard legal advice in the US to never speak to the police. What is the best thing that can happen to you if you talk to an officer? They don't arrest you, that's what. Unless you are the victim of a serious crime (say, you've been burglarized and need to file a report) what great benefit is there to calling the police? Call if you have to, speak if you have to, but otherwise don't.

In some states, you can be arrested for wasting an officer's time.
