Actually I'm in a similar situation IRL. The brother of my fianc earlier this year had a birthday dinner earlier in the year, and prior to this had broken up with a girlfriend he'd been seeing for about a year. He then contacted us all before the dinner because it turns out he had also been seeing another girl at the same time for around a year, and we had to maintain the story he was telling her. I would've liked to tell her but felt it wasn't my place and would turn her family against me, and my fianc is very loyal to her family as well, even though she thinks it's horrible.
