I still think season 1 is one of the best adventure shows of all time. Theres always some new pokemon related thing to see over every new hill whether it be in the wild or in town. I also think misty is a pretty good version of her archetype. Ashe is a dumbass but at least somewhat realistically the dumbass kid loses a shit ton and takes like 20 years to accomplish his goal after a ton of failures. Most shonen protagonists "never give up" but I can't think of any that have failed and kept going half as many times as ashe.

He probably wouldn't lose as much if he didn't insist on basically restarting his team every time he visited a new region. However, even there it's kinda ridiculous since Pikachu should be OP by himself (despite being an unevolved Pokemon) yet he routinely loses to Pokemon and trainers just starting out. The same Pikachu who once beat a powerful Dragonite gets curbstomped by an Elekid. Wtf?

The other thing that kills me about the show is that they never really use a lot of characters again. The other Kanto rivals iirc are never even seen. You have that stupidly OP Sandshrew from an early episode where it would have been cool if they had another rematch but he never comes back. And, given the episodic nature of the show, they could have done a *lot* of recurring characters if they wanted.
