I'm more into punk over metal, but I have a few suggestions regardless if you want to broaden your horizons.
Intro to punk that isn't real heavy
NOFX - White Trash Two Heebs and a Bean Bad Religion - All Ages or Stranger Than Fiction Face to Face - Big Choice
More indy/hardcore than punk
At The Drive In - Relationship of Command Snapcase - Progression Through Unlearning
These are among my favorite albums, ever in any genre, and highly suggest for someone looking to get into a new band. If you like either Bad Religion or NOFX album, they both have literally a dozen others, and have been around for so long. Give the vocalist of NOFX a fair chance, he can be a bit off putting at first.
At The Drive in became Sparta, and then became The Mars Volta, which is likely their most successful rendition, but they tended to get more emo and strange throughout.
I think I've only heard a bit of Bad Religion out of these, but I know 21st Century Digital Boy and liked it; I'll have to look into them more.
