The black mark persists until either the next deathblow on a mook enemy (or a number, I can't recall precisely how it works) or a deathblow on a given boss's hp bar. In other words, when you resurrect, you need to either kill some folks to be able to resurrect again, or deplete a boss's hp bar to resurrect again.
