It's a cartoon based on Japanese toys that an American company turned into a best-selling toyline (which its Japanese creator then used to sell those same toys) Transformers is more on the anime side of the line, all the more so because there are several Transformers series that are Japan-exclusive (e.g. Super-God Masterforce and Victory) and thus not tailored to American audiences.
