I think for most people it's a lack of education on the subject, or that their perceived lack of exposure to trans/non binary people to them means that there aren't many out there. I do think there's progress being made right now, but it's very slow; as we chip away at the concepts of what makes a man a "man" and what makes a woman a "woman", I think things will start to get better. No one should have to contort their self expression to fit inside this perfect little checkbox.
