It's because most people have only watched Mighty Morphin' and as they grew up, their entire perception of the franchise is based on that one season. Despite the fact that later seasons have far better writing and characters. Nostalgia is the biggest factor, but I also think it helps season 1-3 was a continuation of the story and to a lesser extent there was some continuation up until In Space.
