It is detrimental to send a student forward in academics when they aren't ready to advance. The point of taking a class is to learn the material. Passing students who did not learn the material, for literally any reason, is contrary to the point of education. Edit: that's not to say there should be literally no flexibility. I agree that down in the border of pass fail, more flexibility should be granted.
