Then we learned more about it's capabilities in Avengers 1. But Dark World was the first movie to use the phrase "Infinity Stones" and declare how dangerously powerful they were, as Asgard didn't want to have two of them in one place. Yes TDW is directly setting up the Infinity War but give TFA some credit. Just because we didnt know what the tesseract was doesnt mean the writers didnt (which, speaking of are Markus and Mcfeely, the guys who also did TDW, every Captain America movie and Infinity War / Endgame).
