I felt it was kind of a downer and the happy ending of Korra wasn't earned. I thought that they were going to do a lesson about how she needs to get in touch with the spiritual side of the Avatar and that's how she restores her powers. Like she learns to be patient and more in tune with harmony or whatever (since her biggest flaw has been her impetuous personality and rashness) and then she finally awakens the Avatar state and gets in touch with Aang/the rest and gets her powers back. Korra did do something to get in touch with the spiritual world. She learned there was no way to restore her powers, leaving the world without an Avatar. She ventures out alone, rejecting any offers of company. She goes close enough to a cliff edge that her tears fall into the ocean when she cries.
