Some of those boards are the best places on the internet for discussion due to the anonymous nature. You don't have to deal with drama like you have here on CE for example or users having reputations that follow them to every thread. Lots of people on forums tend to remember stupid shit other users post or obsess over the smallest details so it ruins the nature of the forums themselves. Users who have been around longer and ewho are more popular tend to get more attention and notoriety for better or for worse.

On sites like the chans, everyone is on equal footing. You have people who get trips(names) to become recognizable but most anons tend to dislike those users for one reason or another. On the chans, you can say whatever you want no matter how stupid it is without fear of other users documenting and using it against you later on. If you lose an argument, just leave the thread and nothing happens. You can't just enter a thread and make an idiotic one sentence shitpost either like many people here on CE like to do. Otherwise, people will ignore your posts. Posts need some degree of thought put into them in order to get many users to respond. Even the shitposts aren't totally mindless usually.

Like Vy said, most people think /b/ = 4chan which isn't true. Lot of the other boards don't even like /b/ for the same reason why most sane people don't like /b/. /co/ or Comics & Cartoons is good for talking about all sorts of comics and cartoons no matter how obscure. Most other sites dedicated to discussing comics or cartoons are dead or dying. /co/ is also one of the more civil boards. The Darkstalkers threads hosted every October are awesome.

/tv/ or Television & Film is just pure shitposting. It's rare to find anons discussing anything. Avoid /pol/ for obvious reasons. /lit/ is good for discussing books. /v/ has is a mixture of dumb shitposting and decent discussion but super fun when live presentations are happening. /sci/ is a good place to talk about Science & Math actually. There are actually some really intelligent people there.

There's a board for everything and most of them don't act like /b/. I actually recommend people with less common interests look into those boards. There are boards dedicated to history and even transportation. Just stay away from /b/ and /pol/ and you should be good.
