The series does a few different things with its Law vs. Chaos dynamic, and the creators seem to really like Mastema, as he features prominently in Strange Journey and SMT IV. Mastema is sort of a proto-Lucifer in Jewish traditions, and both games have him ostensibly aligned with God.
