I feel like, given the stats and speculation from Italy itself, they're only reporting relatively severe cases. They have multiple complicating factors though.. it seems most of their cases are fairly concentrated in the north, they have an older average population, and they are short on ventilators, all of which will raise the mortality rate.

Without a stressed health care system, this virus seems to kill around 2% overall. It seems like healthcare system failure at least doubles, if not triples, that. Just my own speculation.

Even with this idea, the fact remains that decent clusters do actively stress or overwhelm healthcare systems. THAT is what anyone should be freaked out at least a little bit about even in the absence of losing a loved one.
