The us population is also close to half of the population of the entire continent of Europe though. So while we have more cases than Italy or spain, the percentage of the population that has it is much much lower.

Indeed. Per capita numbers are still less scary than most other countries, with the exception of China (whose published numbers are about as meaningful here as my phone number would be), so this isn't as dire as it may seem. That said, the epicenters within the US are absolutely getting there, and the rest of the country should be taking significant precautions to avoid following suit. NY, California, and Washington should probably be closing their state borders to contain it.
