You're supposed to go to school, grow up, get a job, meet a nice gal/guy, then settle down and have multiple kids, 2 cars, and an RV or boat or something. The south is still stuck believing in the typical American dream and nuclear family without recognizing how different everything is now. Throw religion and conservative politics in the mix and it gets worse.
