Being "tough" in the traditional sense (AKA, choking on your emotions, never developing emotional intelligence or the ability to confide in others in a healthy way) is the same as being brittle. It's like a piece of rusted metal. Yes it looks tough, but when it takes a real impact that would destroy anything, it can't bend, so it breaks.

Human beings need to learn how to deal with emotions as friends and signals, not as weaknesses to be buried. All human beings need that.
