However, I suspect if it really came to it that MA at the very least would be willing to change its law to add the requirement that the appointment be a member of the party of the Senator who had held the seat. MA already changed its law to allow the governor to appoint a temporary replacement back in 2009 to fill Ted Kennedy's seat in the time before the special election so they've got a track record of being willing to change the rules there.
