It was stated in an article somewhere that the PS5 costs Sony around 400 just to make so selling it at cost would be zero profit and I dont know about you but most companies dont like that. Especially companies with board members, investors and stocks. Pretty much every console besides Nintendo ones have been sold at a loss on release. Get the consumer base early, sell more games and services to make up for it and the fact that it will become cheaper to manufacture later on so you are only selling at a loss for a small amount of it's life.
