I apologize if what Im about to say sounds stupid. So it seems like every couple of years a new deadly virus appears and everyone goes crazy and acts like the world is ending. Weve had mad cow disease, swine flu, Ebola, Zika and now corona virus. But even though everyone starts acting like these diseases are everywhere and you have a high chance of getting infected, it seems like these outbreaks always get contained quckly and everything blows over very fast.

So Im just wondering why everyone gets so hysterical about this stuff every time. It seems like your chances of getting one of these diseases in a first world country is about the same as winning the lottery but everyone still goes crazy anyway

Because the news and media love it when something like this comes out like this as it means they are going to get more viewers. The longer they can keep it going and the more scared they can make the public the better.

On the flip side thats not to say the quarantine and other things put in place are an overreaction. They are still needed to try and contain the virus.
