#76. Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve came out during that golden age when Square could basically do no wrong, and I was willing to buy any game they came out with on blind faith. That faith was usually rewarded, too! I sure do miss those days. I wonder if theres ever another company Ill feel that way about. Anyway, Im not really a survival horror guy (as you can see by their complete absence from this list), so Parasite Eve is normally the type of game I wouldnt play otherwise (I know its not QUITE survival horror, but bear with me here). Now I havent played the game in 20 years, and Ive heard people say that it feels kinda slow and outdated when theyve tried to replay it nowadays, but Im not going to judge it based on that. I do remember liking the fact that you could run around the battlefield waiting for your next turn to pop up. Im not sure if it actually has any impact on the battle, but it was a neat touch!

Parasite Eves strength is its atmosphere. Eve is a truly fearsome villain, and she provides an excellent foil to Aya. She challenges Ayas humanity and her abilities that allow her to go beyond the bounds of it. The sheer power of Eves presence is strong enough to cause anyone too close to her to spontaneously burst into flames, except for Aya for reasons that are explained during the game. I distinctly remember a boss fight in a carriage in Central Park being pulled by two flaming horses, and that was awesome. You also fight a literal T-Rex skeleton in a museum. I thought it was cool that the game took place around a lot of famous New York City landmarks and locations. It added an element of realism to it.

As a protagonist, Aya Brea is both really cool and really hot. Seriously though, in terms of attractively designed video game characters, Aya is near the top of the list for me. She also has a lot of great artwork! One of the worst things about the two sequels (other than them just being bad games) is that they chopped Ayas hair super short because thats just no good. But yeah, shes got a lot of really cool powers, and its fun seeing how powerful she becomes over the course of the game. Its sad that well never get another good Parasite Eve game, but well always have this one!
