Actually, I ranked over 300 games, but only 100 of them are getting writeups, so the topic title is still technically correct!

Basically what I did was compile a spreadsheet of every game I can remember playing. Then I deleted the ones I didn't remember well enough to judge, and I put the rest into one of those sorter engine things. After hundreds of choices, this is the list that was generated! I'm not sure I'd even agree with it myself, but it gives me an excuse to talk about games I care about, so whatever.

I'm not sure I'll get around to anything tonight, but I'll post the 200+ games that didn't make the list in the next post. I'm sure there will be plenty of games on the outside looking in that others will take issue with because my taste can be weird sometimes, but I'm okay with that!

Actually, if there are any games outside of the top 100 you guys want to know my thoughts on briefly, I will oblige!

428 is a really unique twist on the traditional visual novel format. It kind of threw me for a loop that it was basically live-action people the whole time, but once I got used to it, I really started to dig it. I like how the characters all intersect and interact with each other at various points, and how even the slightest decision change can unleash a butterfly effect on other characters. I love the fact that there are so many bad endings. Kano in particular seems to get the worst (and funniest) ones. He and Minorikawa were my two favorite characters. It had a bunch of cool twists throughout. I think the ending gets a little too dark and self-serious at times, but it still managed to keep things fresh with a couple of new twists.

That being said, having to go through routes repeatedly to try to find the right chain of events can be a little monotonous at times, especially if you're trying to get all of the endings. I did follow a guide to get the Platinum because there was no way I was trying to do all that on my own...!

jeeze, not even DK can compete with this kind of a massive dump. let's take it apart

#314. Street Fighter
#315. Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero

you're basically calling these the worst games ever made here, and I kind of like where your head is at!

#292. Xenosaga Episode III
#293. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

aw man, XS3 isn't *this* bad, at least not when you've got the other games higher. something about Smash 3DS being in this spot really cracked me up so I had to mention it.

#278. Mega Man 1

just posting this one to say how odd your MM rankings are. MM8 is bad, yeah, but then MM5 is somehow lower and MM1 is above them. kinda scared to keep going here.

#274. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
#275. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

hey, at least you have them in the right order. I kinda like how LTTP is apparently the 275th best game of all time and yet it's still under Ocarina. have to believe there's some contest bias going on here, though I wouldn't claim it with any level of seriousness.

#267. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

I'm seriously surprised that you actually think this game is this low. even for me, this game makes it into the top 200.

#237. Final Fantasy V

FF5 is apparently the worst FF you've played enough to rank? we need to get you in on that fiesta, though you don't play rpgs for gameplay.

#233. Super Baseball Simulator 1.000

just a sidenote that I really loved this game.

#291. Mario Kart DS

this one is from way earlier but I had to comment after seeing how long it took for another Mario Kart to show up. DS is one of the few ones that I would call better than mediocre!

#164. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All

okay this is weird, but only because I *know* you like this game more than me and I rate it much higher. hmm!

#138. Ori and the Blind Forest

aw, I thought this would end up higher for you. I didn't expect it below super metroid, but I didn't expect super metroid to be that high either.

anyway, I stopped commenting somewhat but mostly because the interesting thing became where things ranked compared to others and that picture is really incomplete without the top 100. maybe I'll comment more when you get to the real games. nice effort so far.

I mean, I'd say once it gets past the top...150 or so, it's probably just a crapshoot and I was just picking on gut reactions! I can probably find something nice to say about 95% of the games on this list! The 300s is probably where I'd say the games are mostly all pretty bad!

And yeah, if you've ever played the original Street Fighter, it's pretty atrocious, and MK Mythologies is terrible on every level.

I just didn't like the way Smash played on 3DS. I bought it there since I never bought a Wii U, and it just never felt right to me. I couldn't handle it.

And I'll never forgive Xenosaga Episode III for how it ended...!

And I actually recently replayed all the Mega Man games on the Legacy Collection (including playing 9 and 10 for the first time!), so those are all relatively fresh in my mind. I think MM1 is just a poorly designed game for the most part. It's really rough around the edges. MM8 is a hot mess that gets exacerbated by how terrible the voice acting is. 5 just felt lazy and uninspired all around. I wouldn't say any of them are flat out terrible though!

Mario Kart DS, I just never liked. Too much snaking and a Mario Kart game without viable multiplayer is a game without much of a shelf life for me!

LTTP and Punch-Out are fine, but I have no strong feelings for them. They're games I experienced way after the fact. I can appreciate how well made they are, but they don't strike any sort of chord with me personally.

Trying to rank AA and FF in particular is really difficult for me! I think there's a part of me that tries to prevent ranking the ones I like the least really highly just so they don't dominate the top part of the list! I do like all of the FF games I've actually completed, and even AJ isn't that bad, no.

Super Baseball Simulator was a lot of fun! I loved the rocket bat that would instantly send anyone who caught a ball straight back to the wall.

Ori was really fun! I can't really say anything bad about it, but I'm not sure Metroidvania is a genre I'll ever really love like a lot of people do!

Paper Mario is really fun, but I think TTYD outclasses it in just about every way (list spoilers). Paper Mario was the prototype, and TTYD was the finished product (and somehow they've never been able to recapture the magic since. I didn't include Sticker Star because I didn't get far into it, but that thing would be near the bottom if I did. What happened to this series?). That being said, I do like how Paper Mario plays the story straight while just about every other Mario RPG mixes up the formula a bit by making Bowser an ally or by creating a different antagonist altogether. It's somehow unique by being the most formulaic...! The playable cast is simple but charming. The worlds are colorful (Shy Guy's Toy Box being the highlight), too.

And I'll give Paper Mario this: The final battle is one of my favorite moments in any Mario game. It's so good!

#100. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call

As you can see by looking at this list, Im not a music/rhythm genre fan. Outside of this, Ive only played the Persona ones, which are fine. Final Fantasy is my favorite series, and Im a huge fan of video game music, especially this series, so when they released the original Theatrhythm, I decided to take the plunge. It was decent fun, albeit very limited. Each game represented (just the mainline games from I-XII) only had three songs each, and the only playable characters were the protagonists of each game. It was fun but shallow.

Curtain Call fixed that issue in a big way. There are about 70 playable characters and over 300 songs (100 of them being DLC, including songs from other Square games like Chrono Trigger, Nier, and Xenogears). It also isnt just a straight up pick a song and play it game like the original. Theres a quest mode where it will randomly generate maps with different songs at increasing difficulties, and its actually pretty fun! The various backgrounds are colorfully nostalgic, and as a long time fan, its cool to see something like Zidane marching down the halls of Alexandria Castle to the tune of Behind the Door or beating the crap out of Safer Sephiroth in tune to One-Winged Angel. It can be pretty addictive trying to clear each song on increasing difficulty levels. I got to the point where I could beat Hard mode songs with regularity, but Ultimate was often too much for me, especially on battle stages. My reflexes just werent fast enough! If I beat it on Ultimate, I just barely squeaked by, but it was still a lot of fun.

My one major knock against the game is the artwork. I dont want to see Squall and Cloud looking like creepy chibi dolls. I dont know who thought this was a good idea, but if they ever make another Theatrhythm for Switch (please do), change the art style!

transience already covered it but XS3's placement the greatest sin of this list before it even truly started! I'll give a provisional second place to Trails in the Sky the 3rd. such disrespect to the GOAT to put it at 166.

As for other short comments on the pre-list: Oregon Trail feels way too low. It's nothing amazing but at that point in the list I'm not sure it really has to be! Man, OoT also getting some serious disrespect. No issues with it not making the Top 100 or anything but man that's low. Also hilarious that it's immediately losing to Tiny Toons. A bit surprised at KH 0.2 being that low, yeah it's basically a KH3 demo but it's a good demo! Another surprise is Mass Effect that low. It can be quite rough at times but still! I touched on Trails the 3rd but I'm also a bnit surprised at Cold Steel 1/2 being that low all considered. Thought they might be able to sneak in on the bottom of the list or at least get pretty close, kinda where FC is more or less. Also boooo at Persona 3's placement.

Yeah, I was never really an Oregon Trail guy. Fording the river never works, darn it! I was always more of a Carmen Sandiego guy, as the list accurately reflects.

And honestly, even I was surprised by how low Ocarina of Time placed! Must have been some unconscious contest bias, I guess! I didn't expect it to finish down that low. But it's tough because I DO like most of the games on the list. Like I said, a lot of it was gut reactions in the moment. If I redid the whole thing tomorrow, I imagine a lot of the list would change! It's just whichever game sparked fond memories in me more at the time when I had to make a choice! I thought the Trails games would be higher, too! It's like I don't even know myself!

#99. Tales of the Abyss

Tales of the Abyss is a paradox of sorts. There are aspects of it that are simultaneously likable and unlikable. I always enjoy a story where the heroes are fighting to overcome a seemingly inescapable fate, but my word, this game beats you over the head with its nonsense terminology. If you think Kingdom Hearts is bad about this, try to keep track of how many times Tales of the Abyss talks about fonons and the Score! The playable cast is a mixed bag in a lot of ways. Theyre all deeply flawed and hard to like for long stretches of time. Nobody embodies that more than the main character, Luke fon Fabre, who is spoiled, whiny, entitled, self-absorbed, abusive, and thoughtless for the first third of the game or so. Anyone who knows me knows that a hero I cant root for is often the death knell of a game for me, and yet I found myself sticking it out anyway. The gameplay was good enough to keep me engaged. The battle system was fun (I preferred playing as Guy, for the record. He reminded me a lot of Lloyd from Symphonia), and the dungeons were nowhere near as convoluted as Symphonias were, which is a plus. Eventually my perseverance was rewarded.

I wont go into detail here because of spoilers, but theres a very clear turning point in this game. If youve played Abyss, you know the moment Im talking about here. Then Luke undergoes a redemption arc the likes of which Im not sure Ive ever seen in another video game. Ive seen people complain about the way its handled, and I think some of the criticisms are valid, but I was impressed by just how drastically Luke changed over the course of the game. It was a real treat to watch, and it provides for a few genuinely moving moments. I also really liked the villain ensemble in Abyss, and how each villain had a deep connection to one of the playable characters. It made for some good foils, and I love me some foils.

Overall, I would say Tales of the Abyss is aptly named! The early part of the game does attempt to drag you down into the abyss, but if you can endure it long enough (and some people cant! At the time I played Tales of the Abyss, there were a couple of other B8ers who were playing it alongside me, and I was the only one who finished it!), the payoff is worth it, in my opinion. At the very least, I can say Ive never played another JRPG quite like it.

i've got it mostly down. this game was a great primer for me in my "be able to understand and accept the sometimes bs logic of fictional universes"

Like it actually makes a whole lot of sense in my head once I put enough thought into it but maybe I'm just insane.

I think early game Luke is much improved on replays of the game when you understand the full context of his character. On that first playthrough he is indeed insufferable but with the benefit of knowing the whole story I think he's actually a very interesting character when you can place his actions and behavior in context. He's actually a pretty solid guy he just understandably has the maturity of like a six-year old which... is chronologically accurate! It's jarring to see it from a perspective of not knowing which is interestingly both the player and most of the actual cast and they all react accordingly. And yes, that redemption arc is quite the arc.

Love that cast minus Anise still think there was a ton of missed potential with Arietta defecting to the party as her replacement given the situation at the time basically lining up the possibility. Would have made an interesting foil to Luke given their relatively similar situations in origin stories that severely screwed up their emotional maturity with the differences in their support systems giving them very divergent outcomes.

Great OST too, probably my favorite Tales OST though Vesperia can give it a run. Really the Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia stretch may have been the golden era of Tales OSTs. They haven't been as all-around solid in past years, being more forgettable on the whole with a few singular standouts per game.

Luke is really fun to play but I was a Zelos/Kratos player in Symphonia and he was a bit more in their lane as opposed to the Lloyd/Guy link.

I'm not sure there's a video game in existence that improves more on replays than Abyss.

I'd say more about the game here but I'm gonna be doing a Tales-based ranking project in the near future here and I know I'll give things away if I'm not careful.

But yes, the OST is the best in the series, and Mirrors is a fantastic track.

expected mirrors wasn't disappointed.

Oh, I also forgot to mention but while it's a shame it requires NG+ for the Grade Shop but IMO the game is best played on Very Hard with 2x experience. I actually think it's quite balanced on that combo and it has the benefit of fully unlocking the movesets of the bosses. (On Normal and even Hard bosses don't use some moves, usually Mystic Artes in their fights. It's mostly present early on (say hello to Arietta having her Mystic Artes in your first fight), but it's even true for the Bonus Boss's ultimate Mystic Arte!

As for Tales overall, Abyss was for years my favorite by a wide margin though in recent years Xillia 2 and Berseria emerged as very worthy challengers so I now instead just have a Top 3 there where I'd be hard pressed to choose between them.

I do need to play more Tales games eventually! I already own Xillia 2, Vesperia, and Berseria, but I think Xillia kinda wore me down by the end. I know Tales games tend to be on the longer side, but Xillia was definitely longer than it needed to be. I still overall enjoyed it (Milla is the best), but I needed a break from Tales after I beat it. Maybe it's time to dive back in (after DQ11...and then presumably FFVIIR, that is!).

Abyss is definitely my favorite Tales game. And yes, Mirrors is fantastic. I really like how it's a remix of an already really good track that evokes totally different emotions.

Oh I love Tales of the Abyss, I haven't played a lot of Tales games but it is my favorite nontheless. I like every member of the main cast and I think by JRPG standards the story is far better than most. Luke's arc is, like you said, really something - can't think of a lot of games that have protagonists that are that weird and flawed and interesting to see develop.

Also the gameplay's just good. As far as standard JRPGs go I think the Tales series stands above most, the action elements make combat and the idea of having skill a little more urgent, and they're nice and meaty without feeling too heavy or inaccessible. I could actually go for one right now, maybe I'll see if my computer can handle Tales of Berseria or something.

I always wanted to play Vesperia because I heard so many good things about it, but it was a 360 exclusive until recently. I might play that one next, although I've heard people say who've played the HD release that it hasn't aged well, so we'll see!

the problem with doing rankings of essentially every game you've played is that it immediately becomes a comparison even at the bottom of the list. so, I see things like Xenogears before Tales of the Abyss and kind of gag a little. if it was just Abyss at 99, I wouldn't really react at all! (I don't like that game very much, it was the game that convinced me to not bother with more Tales games and I haven't gone back since)

It's okay. I'm sure you're not the only person with that reaction!

And yeah, Abyss definitely isn't for everyone.

#98. X-Men: The Arcade Game/The Simpsons Arcade Game

Yeah, yeah, Im cheating here and combining two games that I could easily talk about separately just for the sake of padding out the list! This is the first time it happens, but it wont be the last! This is mostly an excuse just for me to talk about arcade experiences I had as a kid. Every now and then Ill go to a mall with an arcade in it, and Ill just do a quick walk through it just for old times sake. It usually makes me sad because theyre basically populated with racing simulators and shooters from 20+ years ago and not much else. I mean, those are fine and all, but what I really miss from arcades are the beat-em-ups and the fighting games. Arcades were the only way I was able to experience stuff like Super Street Fighter II Turbo (remember how this was a 3DO exclusive?) or Street Fighter III for a long time until Capcom started porting collections to Playstation consoles. I remember the first time I saw that huge Virtua Fighter arcade setup. It was mind-blowing as a little kid.

Anyway, as far as arcade beat-em-ups go, X-Men and The Simpsons are the ones I remember the most fondly (Well, Turtles in Time, too, but I mostly played that one on SNES). I was always kind of surprised that these two never got home console releases until they were put on digital download stores. I never tried to play them again because I figured they probably wouldnt be as good as I remembered them being, so I chose to preserve my nostalgia! The main thing I remember about X-Men is that it was one of the only video games my dad ever played with me. Hed pick Colossus, and Id pick Nightcrawler (since they had the best special powers), and wed just try to get as far as we could. I dont think we ever beat it, but I just remember bringing it up with my dad from time to time and hed do an impression of the Colossus roar from the game. Now that my dads been gone for a few years, those kinds of memories are precious to me.

As for The Simpsons arcade game, I was a huge fan of the show as a kid in the 90s. Ive barely watched the show at all in the last twenty years, but this game was when the show was in its heyday for me. There were some rough console Simpsons games during the SNES era (Barts Nightmare, anyone?), so it felt refreshing to get to play a good old-fashioned beat-em-up. Unfortunately, it feels like that genre has gone the way of the dinosaur (unless theres something out there Im missing), but it was cool to see a franchise I was a big fan of get a game in that genre. I always played as Bart because he was my favorite Simpsons character. I dont know that I ever got to the end of this one either, but if I had quarters to spare, Id always go at least one round in either The Simpsons or X-Men whenever I had the chance.

My top 7 games are Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime, Super Mario 64, Link to the Past, and Chrono Trigger. After that it's all a blur.

The Simpsons Arcade Game is one of a very small number of arcade game's I've played. Even when I was younger, I heavily favoured consoles over going to the arcade. I pretty much bought my way to the end since there was no way I was actually good at the game but I know I reached the end.

#97. Final Fantasy XV

Man, my feelings on this game are so conflicted. I still havent recovered enough from the last DLC episodes getting canceled and Tabata being canned to actually play the Ardyn episode. They looked like they had so much potential and would have finally closed the game out on a satisfying note. I realize that Final Fantasy XV is so disjointed in many ways, and it never really felt like a cohesive game because of the way they designed it, but I still enjoyed the experience all the same.

The flaws with Final Fantasy XV are easy to pick apart, but none of them were deal breakers to me. People didnt like that there were no female party members (at least permanent ones; there are a few who join temporarily, and you can glitch Aranea into joining permanently, or you could at one point! Dunno if they eliminated that glitch), but I liked the idea of this being a bromance road trip. The concept worked for me. I enjoyed the battle system of switching between weapons for the situation and linking up with the other party members. I kind of liked that there was no sense of real urgency for the first half of the game or so, and then they flipped the switch starting in Chapter 9. I liked being able to ride around in the car listening to classic Final Fantasy tunes and completing sidequests at my leisure, followed by camping out with the guys and Ignis boasting about discovering a new recipe. This was the first non-VN type of game that I actually had the desire to Platinum.

I wish Final Fantasy XV had more overt storytelling, but I was still able to get invested in the journey of Noctis and the guys. I remember saying to user SaveEstelle after I finished the climactic moment of Chapter 9 (I wonder if he remembers this, too!) that this was what I waited a decade for. All the frustration over the development of this game just melted away. I also really liked Chapter 13. Its a really divisive section of the game, even by FFXVs standards, but I liked that the game forced you to adapt to a completely different style of fighting and justified the reason for it. The atmosphere was fantastic as well. I enjoyed the last couple chapters of the game and the ending as well. It felt like a strong ending to the journey, and it had a few poignant moments to drive it home.

Ill say a quick word about the DLC and wrap this up. Episode Gladiolus was whatever, which is fitting because he was pretty whatever as a party member! Episode Prompto was good fun, although nothing special. Episode Ignis was where it was at, and I was glad they saved that for last. Ignis is one of my favorite characters in the series, and his loyalty to Noctis is something special. I loved how it filled in the blanks behind what happened to him in Chapter 9, and it even opened the path to an alternate timeline (which at least one of the remaining DLC episodes would have built upon, which is the main reason I was so disappointed they got canceled). If that was the last thing I ever play from FFXV, it was worth it.

I know but that means it isn't all the content !!

If it becomes clear they have no intention of releasing such an edition that's probably the path I go down but it's Square I don't believe that and I have a big enough backlog that I can wait a while. >_>

or if there is it won't be anytime soon
