#78. Mega Man 10

Not to be confused with Mega Man X! This is the game on the list Ive most recently completed for the first time, so maybe its a bit high because of recency bias, but its still quite good! Ive been talking about Mega Man a lot lately in the SELF topics (</shameless plug>) since I played through the entire Legacy Collection over the past couple weeks. I dont know what got me in the mood to do that, but Im glad I finally got around to playing 9 and 10 a decade late!

Anyway, the basic story behind Mega Man 10 is rather silly. Theres a virus called Roboenza making all the robots who contract it get sick. Perhaps its meant to be a precursor to the Maverick Virus from Mega Man X, but its not like youre playing the game for the story! I just wanted to comment on it because all the cutscenes in the game are kinda cringey as a result. Regardless, the game is a lot of fun, and you have the option of playing as Mega Man or Protoman right away. You can even add Bass to the mix, but hes lame, so who cares. Ive only beaten the whole game as Mega Man. I do love me some Protoman, and I think its great that he has the shield, the slide, and a chargeable Buster. I dont like that he takes way more damage than Mega Man, which I get is part of the tradeoff for having the other bonuses, but still!

I thought one of the coolest things about Mega Man 9 is that they made all the Robot Masters powers viable and usable, not just as a weapon for defeating the bosses, but as a tool to help you complete levels. Well, for some reason, Mega Man 10 goes in the complete opposite direction. I never really found a reason to use their powers outside of boss battles. I suppose its fine because I rarely use anything other than the Buster for most Mega Man games (because, again, its usually all you need), but I was kinda hoping theyd continue the trend since it opened up more strategies. Regardless, the new powers are pretty cool and figuring out how to most effectively use them against the bosses (like putting down ice spikes for Nitro Man to drive over to do more damage than just straight up shooting him with it) was fun.

As far as the new Robot Masters are concerned, I thought it was a pretty good batch! The only lame ones Id say were Chill Man because pretty much every ice robot turns out to be the same (same with fire robots, but they usually at least have cooler designs) and maybe Pump Man. I think Nitro Man and Commando Man were my favorites. Also, I gotta say, as a sports fan, Strike Mans stage might now be my favorite one in the entire Classic series. I thought it was so cool. So yeah, if youre like me, and youre a fan whos been putting off playing Mega Man 9 and 10 for the last decade, go ahead and give them a shot! Theyre well worth it!
