It's mainly a monster/conflict of the week setup (one of the evil generals shows up and creates a monster out of a problem a minor character is having that episode, Precure defeat/purify it and help the minor character solve their problem, rinse and repeat) but there's always an overarching storyline in the background and a long-term goal the Precure are working towards. Some series twist the formula a little (a few have "dark" Cures like Yes 5 and Smile, a few have random mooks along with the big monsters like Heartcatch and Star Twinkle) but don't deviate too much from it.
