Absolutely fantastic movie but clearly not for everyone. If you don't care about the setting or the Manson stuff then yeah you're obviously not going to have a good time.

I think it's an especially cool movie in comparison to Inglorious Basterds, Tarantino's other big alternate history film. It's fun to see how much specificity was needed to alter history in that movie, while in Hollywood, all it took was two completely unrelated guys just living their lives to change one of the city's most grisly moments.
