Going through the last four user submissions - I feel like I can get my thoughts down faster now, so that's a good sign!

rpg battle? cool chords and synth. wait now it's not a battle theme. 1:50 cool flourishes!
Score: 722
This ain't no game, I'm just looking at promo art for some 90s anime film! The opening really had me thinking it would be a classic battle theme, but then suddenly dramatic overworld/dungeon music? Somehow, I wanna say it feels like a mix of Roer and Demon Vesper from earlier, probably because they're fresh in my mind as reference points. I was really excited about the first 20 seconds and it didn't go where I wanted, but I don't mind a wistful-sounding adventure theme either (if only it had better instruments). Also felt like the big flourishes like 0:55 should have led into something more exciting.

oh no 6:25!!! big orchestra sound, hope it gets more interesting though. right now it just feels like classical music. a classical song would follow this slow section with something faster...2:13 OUCH MY HEART MY BLOOD PRESSURE WHAT that was rude but the song is better 3:03 OWIE IT HAPPENED AGAIN ok I'll be prepared next time. 3:52 ooooh cool part, big brass coming through
Score: 667
Uhh I feel like I'm just reviewing classical music here. I generally find VGM like this unengaging because it takes too long for musical ideas to be developed; I am a millennial I want reward and gratification now!!! This would probably be incidental music to some heroic tale from European folklore back in the good ol' days, telling a clear story with different sections but the high points like 3:52 don't really make up for the rest. I suppose it's cool that the theme from 2:13 gets referenced throughout the song but it wasn't worth me nearly falling off my chair! My dad would probably like this better than me.

here we go again! um why does she sound so bored. no power at all! 2:04 ooh okay. this one sounds more "anime" than the other one. 2:48 oh she CAN sing! 3:42 cool new part. 4:00 oh no why robot. this fadeout is awkward
Score: 848
Oh no how could they do this to my baby??? I do think this is more towards the younger-sounding voice type I would like from this song; I thought the original singer's voice sounded too "old" with her breathier texture on the low notes. Unfortunately, the performance in this one just sounds uninspired, real "I'm only in the recording studio because I'm getting paid" vibes. I can see her style fitting in with a softer-sounding chorus, but they also changed the instrumental track to contrast more between sections, and all the activity in the chorus kinda overpowers her voice. She does do a more impressive job of hitting the I-MAAAAAAAAA in "Ima sora miagete," so I'll give her credit for that (and wow I just realized that lyric is a title drop holy crap I love this song). The original felt like a heartfelt farewell from a humble franchise to its dedicated fanbase; this one feels like corporate directors trying too hard to appeal to a more mainstream audience with a "hey let's make it sound more like those anime soundtrack songs!" (wouldn't be completely unjustified given the nature of remakes). Doesn't take away from the fact that it's still a great song though!

oh no zelda temple chanting. okay there's a violin. now guitar! jazz piano! interesting mix of instruments in this one. trombone now! trumpet!
Score: 766
This song sounds like what music will become in 10 years or something! It definitely is one that transcends genre, though there are clear rock and jazz elements in there. I appreciate the abundance of solo instruments passing various themes off to one another, which makes it feel really dynamic and active. I don't find the main melody repeated by the violin particularly interesting though, so it's not really a strong theme to put so much focus on in the song. This just sounds like it's too ahead of its time - maybe I'll like it more in 10 years!
