Completely disregarding all of Wildcards, MAGFest, and AGDQ happening today, I'm gonna try rating some VGM to start the new year! No nomination period or anything, just post songs for the rest of the day and I'll respond as soon as I see it. Also the ratings are out of 1000 because big numbers are big - better to get a score of 600 than 6.0, right?

Rules:
- VGM means songs must originate from a game, available either in-game or on the OST (no arranges).
- Only submit one song at a time; once I've responded to your previous song, you can post another one.
- Submissions are open until the karma strikes 1001, which should be around 10 PM EST (7.33 hours from now).
- At the end, I'll rank my top 10 from what's been submitted. I'll take some time to revise my ratings for this, so it won't necessarily be the songs that got the highest scores.

And here's a free sample chosen randomly from VGMC1 that I hadn't heard before! I'll generally open with some semi-conscious thoughts I had while listening to the song.

battle theme! a bit of jazz. love me those high strings. 0:56 is super nice. then loop at the half
Score: 738
This is pretty nice, it's got a casual energy to it interspersed with some more emotional sections. Style reminds me of the newer Etrian Odyssey battle themes, which I've become very acquainted with since last year. Could do with some higher-quality instruments though.

Score: 778
This is cool, I really like the interpolation of the Devil Trigger samples. I love modern-sounding synths and this uses them in a way I like. I'd probably put this above Devil Trigger? The middle sections get a little slow but it really picks it up at the end!

oh boy, first time listening to this all the way through. it's cool when a section comes up that somewhat resembles a song. hey this is one of those annoying videos that ends with silence!!!
Score: 535
I was expecting to give this an even 500 because I'd feel completely neutral on it, but it's at least interesting to listen to. I think the story is that this is just one of many procedurally generated/randomly generated iterations of the song, so everyone who plays the game will get something different. It's fun listening for nicer-sounding sections; 1:15-1:30 doesn't sound too bad. It might even break 600 if it used nicer sounds than just bleeps and bloops!

thought this was a touhou fangame but then PlayStation(tm)2. definitely got that touhou-style piano. 0:45 is a pretty dull guitar riff. but then 1:00?!? good violin. wow big classical at 1:55. hi loop
Score: 644
I thought the guitar was the main thing holding it back, but it might actually be the lack of oomph in the drums. The piano and violin sections are pretty good, and it gets really nice at the end before looping.

This has a lot of harmony and melody elements I enjoy! There's a lot of short sections I like, usually when the texture/instrument layers get more populated. I just feel like the rest of it could use a fuller sound and maybe more motion in the instruments.

Oh yeah, this is the kind of wistful emotional Falcom town theme I like!!! Does remind me a lot of Looking Up at the Sky from SC, but maybe most town themes are just like that and I'm missing out. Love love love the chords happening and use of high strings. The harp thing sounds a little out of place with the other insturments.

what the hell is this fruit game why is it 7 minutes long. OOOH 1:27. this is a JAM haha get it. ooh quiet 3:25 what's gonna happen...it's slowly picking up...I'm still waiting...4:50, that's the resolution I wanted!
Score: 768
Gotta come back to this after the topic's over, I don't usually listen to this kind of song and it feels like there's a lot to process. I do like electronic music and there are some really cool-sounding instruments in there, though I tend to prefer when there's a stronger tonality I can recognize, while this one is more about building texture and rhythms. The big breakdowns I mentioned above are pretty satisfying.

It's definitely got that indie charm, slightly weird instruments with strong melodic lines. Now I want to know where this plays, it sounds too dramatic for just a forest theme! I'd like it a lot if the melodies were more interesting.

Score: 825
I really wanted this to be longer!!! I guess that's both a good and bad thing...I just thought there would be a big climax somewhere. Definitely a cool electronic song to chill at home to while it plays on Spotify; I'd have a hard time recognizing this as actual VGM. I totally lost track of time while listening which might be why I got caught off-guard by the ending! Unsure about the vocal style but I could get used to it on repeat listens.

Score: 878
I really love this, it works so damn well as an ending theme. I was so surprised when I found out the original was just a town theme and not something more significant. This version is just slightly below the original, which would be around 890. I thought it would be slowing down towards the end but then it came back with everything and really delivered! Score: 648
Cave Story - Moonsong is what it reminds me of, I think. Very mysterious song, it's got the makings of something I'd like but goes a bit minimalist on the instruments; basic chiptune is usually not enough to get me into a song by itself. Not sure if this is the one "Retro" song from the game or they're all like this, but I might like something more layered from the same soundtrack.

I remember this soundtrack! would this be country rock? nice electric riffs.
Score: 772
I nearly supported this in BOST, the songs all have a great aesthetic and instruments I like, it's real country road motorbike gang-like. I enjoy the general feel and you do get the instruments doing some interesting things, but it just feels like a new section never starts. It'd be better for background music than something I'd actively listen to, especially with the repeating bassline that always holds the harmony in place.

Score: 781
The vocals turn me off every so slightly to this song, but she gets the job done. The chords are super nice and I love the instrumentation, it makes for some big moments during the choruses and when she hits the "connection"! The instruments used really make it feel like it should be a faster, more high-energy song though, especially the drums, and I'd love for it to feel like a bigger moment when the chorus comes in.

Score: 808
I like this, reminded me of DOOM but it's got more structure to it and orchestral parts which are really nice. Electric guitars with orchestra is definitely a sound I can get behind, and the metal never gets too harsh for my tastes. That's kind of a weird sound they used for the snare though, I feel like it makes it lose a lot of its intensity. Sounds like it would make for a great boss fight against the guy in the thumbnail.

This had potential to be really good, shame that the loop is so short! Super cool rock + jazz energy, I love the big chords in the piano and drum breaks. The super muted/distorted trumpet sounds kinda weird to me, but I might get used to it. Whoever's on that sax is killing it!

Cool dissonant elements, definitely feels like I'm fighting some forces of darkness. Don't really like the wah synth thing playing broken chords, it gets kinda tiring, but the intense part where it drops out is pretty good! Dated instruments holding it back just a little here.

Score: 634
No idea what to make of this, it's like two and a half songs slapped together into one. Apparently you've entered some undead Mexican village and have to fight the horde of villagers??? I was starting to enjoy the part right after the Spanish, but it got cut off before it could go anywhere. The guitar in the first part is nice enough, but I'm not a fan of the vocals; I think that's just the style of that kind of Mexican folk though.

Another one with cool atmosphere, there isn't much actually going on, but I think this kind of song really works as a minimalist affair. Definitely sounds like I'm sneaking through some shady places and bad things will happen if I get caught. Some of the sounds even remind me of Umineko, probably goldenslaughterer. Didn't expect to be rating it this high!

title sounds familiar, is it vgmc? (update: I got it confused with Romancing Saga: Minstrel Song - A Challenge to God ~Four Guardian Kings Battle~) good chords! the harp is cool. ooh 2:12 very satisfying!
Score: 682
This is one where I can tell it's a really good song, but the instrument quality doesn't really do it justice. It's got the chord progressions and different sections I always like in a battle theme, and I'm sure it's very good for its era. Looks like it's 1995, so that's actually quite impressive for being 25 years old (why is everything so far from 2020) - it reminded me a bit of the Lufia II battle themes, turns out that's also 1995!

Most songs from this soundtrack would be an instant 800+, but I don't really find this one interesting, even during the busier sections with the pretty chords. Instrumentation is nice enough, but the words just don't sound as good as other songs. I think it's the consonant sounds I don't like? Comments say she based this song's lyrics on Hebrew; doesn't sound like a language I'd want to learn!

Really fun song with lots of positive energy! I love the trumpets and bongo-like drums driving the rhythm. Vocals kinda weird but I can see them growing on me. Feels like it fits the Katamari Damacy aesthetic really well, filling you with a carefree bounce to go explore the wondrous world out there. I've been missing out, I always dismissed this as a meme and never took the time to give it a proper listen! I guess a lot of songs become memes precisely because they are good. It's got a real solid melody in the high synths and cool drum fills as well. I remember liking the Smash Ultimate remix during BOST, so that might be a version with modern instruments that I'd actually enjoy a lot.

I do like the general feel of an RPG battle theme, it just feels like a very "safe" composition that doesn't do much outside of very standard things. The electric guitars also sound washed-out, this might just be a low-quality upload or something. Solo violin is always nice, but sounds a little fake in this one. Are all the instruments just standard orchestral library samples and that's why it sounds low quality?!?

This is cool, it's very chill but not completely relaxing either. The in-and-out synths do a good job of making me think of floating up and down on the waves. I do think it's at its strongest from 1:48 until the loop, the synths in the middle sections don't quite fit with the other layers and the piano melody feels too simple. The boss themes are probably better for me - wait, is Crabulon the boss of this stage?! (update: apparently it only has the Giant Clam miniboss which doesn't get a theme)

Big goosebump-worthy moments. I am back with the first half of my top 10! I basically started from a pool of contenders which I listened to 3-5 times each to try and gain some appreciation for things I had missed, but for most of them, uh, it just made me realize I was too optimistic with my initial rating. Even with 10 songs, there was lots of re-ordering and songs getting taken on and off the list, so I definitely made the right decision not to make this a "you hit me with 1000 VGM" topic. Heck, I still wonder how people can deal with 100+ songs!

10. Katamari Damacy - Katamari on the Rocks (Score: 760, previously 822)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhKMDjfToEc
Whoops, this was one of the songs I thought I really liked but eventually got tired of. I do love the energy in here and enjoy the parts where the guy sings the main melody, but it's kinda too long for its own good and the in-between sections aren't that interesting. Trumpets and bongos still good!

9. Girls' Frontline - Connexion (Score: 770, previously 781)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYWheToJlPA
I've gotten a bit more used to this singer, but still get turned off by the tone of her vocals. I did realize that I really like the melody in the chorus after coming to accept its more subdued feel (I preferred the pre-chorus before). AND MADE A WALL, A HEDGE BE-TWEEEEEEEEEEEEN - would definitely like this one better if it was faster, though.

8. Yakuza Kiwami 2 - Outlaw's Lullaby (Score: 780, previously 833)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W61-AJIZFCk
Another one that made a big first impression, but I think the lack of more conventional melodies and short loop made me bored after a while. I always like the fun energy that jazz can bring, but definitely prefer it to be paired with parts that have a nicer tonality. Still have no idea how they got that super-high muted trumpet sound; it's just a bit too weird for me to appreciate over something more familiar.

7. Planet 51: The Game - Looking for the Comet (Score: 800, previously 711)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZPIHlCgJqs
Hey, here's one that saw a big boost for a change! I think I was dismissive of this at first because my brain lowered expectations when it saw "licensed song" and "weird CGI animated movie from a no-name studio". This is definitely my kind of song with the melancholy guitar and pretty chords though! I also came to appreciate the second half a lot more, though the acoustic solo in the first half remains my favourite. Now my biggest complaint is only that the song should be longer! Also the faces in the thumbnail make me uncomfortable; that astronaut guy is staring right at me with a creepy smile and he needs to stop!!!

6. CONCLUSE - Lost in 1993 (Score: 810, previously 815)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh4vu3Slty4
I just noticed this song and the previous one both start on a D minor-ish chord. Anyway, this is probably my favourite in the top 10 in terms of instrumentation; these synths are the kind of sound you could do anything with and I'd be able to keep listening for a long time. The dubstep section does bring it down a little bit, but I don't mind it as much now that I've taken notice of the brief "stab, stab" synth chords that come in there and persist until the ending, which I think are cool.

Rest of the list and bonus ratings later this week.

Man, I keep saying I'll finish stuff the same week and then I end up doing it at the beginning of the next week. Let's finish off the top 10!

5. Europa Universalis IV: Guns, Drums and Steel - Ride Forth, Victoriously (Score: 810, previously 839)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO_UqoIDJO0
The sameyness throughout this song got old quick, but I still love the instrumentation enough to enjoy it when I'm in the right mood. Goosebumps when the solo voice comes in, and at the key change. Makes me feel like I'm part of the army charging into the final battle in a Hollywood epic! I guess I technically appreciate the song doing something different in the middle, but it was definitely the wrong kind of different! According to the comments, it really is just English played backwards that says "You shall retrieve those bowls, we never have changed the melody, but those who come, you will become something". Uhh, bowls?

4. Zwei!! - Final Battle ~Demon Lord Vesper~ (Score: 830, previously 829)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTqwGW5ZKYc
Better headphones definitely helped me get used to those high notes. This is a really great inspirational-sounding song with some very charming instrumentation; I would have a hard time trying to place what era the song was from without looking it up. The big drum rolls into cymbal crash during the main section are wonderful. Someone in the comments came to the video from WatchMojo's "Top 10 RPG Boss Battle Themes," which actually mentioned Zwei!!, Ys Origin, Ar Tonelico, and Trails in the Sky SC in its list! It also misspelled the game as "Zweii!"...

3. Kidou Sentai Iron Saga - Mechalullaby (Score: 830, previously 825)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCRtnoYGh2U
I think this genre is called "music that plays over the speakers as you spend your day at the spa & massage centre". I had a hard time evaluating this song at first, because I couldn't really justify its appeal in the ways I usually do for music I enjoy. It really is just a great song to relax to and have playing in the background without evoking any particularly strong emotions. It's very easy to find myself lost in the pleasant sounds and instrumental layers before I find that the song's already over. It's also cool how it uses a principle of "voice as an instrument," as in the lyrics and human element of the vocals don't matter as much as their texture and how they're filtered to blend with the rest of the song. Makes me wonder if I would like it less or more if the voice was replaced with some kind of synth.

2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel - Roer, the Industrial Metropolis (Score: 850, previously 841)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJyIZZRjzJc
Another relaxing song, but now with emotional elements that make it easier to determine why I like it. The beginning and 1:30 are really nice sections with pretty chords and melodies that evoke that vague nostalgia in me. I also don't really mind the harp anymore; it actually does a good job of adding to the magical feeling of new beginnings that I get from this song. Also I really appreciate that the loop just plays the first section again before fading out, ending at just the right spot for me.

1. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd - Looking Up at the Sky (Ending) (Score: 870, previously 878)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3TqH9ileB8
I'm really someone who should check out more Falcom music, huh? But the songs that showed up in VGMC and BOST weren't even as good as what I got from this topic! (maybe the best ones are all retired by now) This is another song for my long list of wistful ending themes, a VGM style I'm a sucker for. The singer does a great job of adding that emotional strain to her voice when she hits the high notes in the chorus. Instant goosebumps! The only place I get a bit bored is in the quiet section before the final chorus, but that just ends up adding to the anticipation for the finale! The phrase from 4:40 to 4:56 is probably my favourite moment from any song on this list; love the lyrics and fast-moving violins there.

Honourable Mentions: Voltaic Black Knight, Guile's Theme, Silver Bullet, Large & in Charge, Greenish Illusion

Thanks to everyone for sharing some cool songs with me! I found something to enjoy in each one and had fun being exposed to new kinds of music. The songs with 830+ will probably be added to my "favourite VGM" playlist. My initial idea was to do this as a warmup for an actual ranking topic, but I think I'm more comfortable with this short-form format so I'll probably keep rolling with it for next time. I still need to be careful about how my expectations influence how much I enjoy a song on the first listen - with enough time, I'll eventually discover all the things I like about a song, but it seems that I'll try harder to do so if I'm already expecting to like it versus when my expectations are low!

Here are the people responsible for the top 10! I guess NFUN is the winner, but I don't know what he gets for winning. I guess I'll be more inclined to consider VGMC noms when I see they're from him?

Score: 722
This ain't no game, I'm just looking at promo art for some 90s anime film! The opening really had me thinking it would be a classic battle theme, but then suddenly dramatic overworld/dungeon music? Somehow, I wanna say it feels like a mix of Roer and Demon Vesper from earlier, probably because they're fresh in my mind as reference points. I was really excited about the first 20 seconds and it didn't go where I wanted, but I don't mind a wistful-sounding adventure theme either (if only it had better instruments). Also felt like the big flourishes like 0:55 should have led into something more exciting.

Uhh I feel like I'm just reviewing classical music here. I generally find VGM like this unengaging because it takes too long for musical ideas to be developed; I am a millennial I want reward and gratification now!!! This would probably be incidental music to some heroic tale from European folklore back in the good ol' days, telling a clear story with different sections but the high points like 3:52 don't really make up for the rest. I suppose it's cool that the theme from 2:13 gets referenced throughout the song but it wasn't worth me nearly falling off my chair! My dad would probably like this better than me.

Score: 848
Oh no how could they do this to my baby??? I do think this is more towards the younger-sounding voice type I would like from this song; I thought the original singer's voice sounded too "old" with her breathier texture on the low notes. Unfortunately, the performance in this one just sounds uninspired, real "I'm only in the recording studio because I'm getting paid" vibes. I can see her style fitting in with a softer-sounding chorus, but they also changed the instrumental track to contrast more between sections, and all the activity in the chorus kinda overpowers her voice. She does do a more impressive job of hitting the I-MAAAAAAAAA in "Ima sora miagete," so I'll give her credit for that (and wow I just realized that lyric is a title drop holy crap I love this song). The original felt like a heartfelt farewell from a humble franchise to its dedicated fanbase; this one feels like corporate directors trying too hard to appeal to a more mainstream audience with a "hey let's make it sound more like those anime soundtrack songs!" (wouldn't be completely unjustified given the nature of remakes). Doesn't take away from the fact that it's still a great song though!

Score: 766
This song sounds like what music will become in 10 years or something! It definitely is one that transcends genre, though there are clear rock and jazz elements in there. I appreciate the abundance of solo instruments passing various themes off to one another, which makes it feel really dynamic and active. I don't find the main melody repeated by the violin particularly interesting though, so it's not really a strong theme to put so much focus on in the song. This just sounds like it's too ahead of its time - maybe I'll like it more in 10 years!

This version makes me realize how much I should appreciate the little things in the original! It really confirms for me that I enjoyed it for the instruments and textures rather than the vocal performance. Her inexperience with English and general tone become much more apparent here and make it hard for me to enjoy the melody as much as before. The guitar strumming sections are quite nice though. The effects on the original really had me convinced she was a native English speaker!

Not sure if I'd actually call this a good remix, since it doesn't retain the charm of the original and basically just feels like a different song with elements of the original piled on top. Fortunately, I like rock so that makes it a better song for me! And it kinda works out in that using the original adds a more magical feeling to the otherwise standard battle theme. The guitar feels like it could be doing more though, when it just plays chords the sound gets muddy without anything interesting happening. 1:12-1:36 is a really good moment! Someone in the comments said "Sounds like some hick wrestling theme from the 80s! the orginal was way better" which I couldn't help but laugh at.

no jazz, it's time for rock! um nothing is happening can something happen please. and now it's over
Score: 708
Very unengaging battle theme that just sounds like the same guitar riffs played over and over. The lack of any strong melody makes it feel like it's meant to serve as background music rather than something interesting, which I guess is a style of music that has its place in games. I certainly don't mind listening to some cool electric guitar things for three and a half minutes though, even if it's basically the same thing the whole time.

Adding one more! I've been meaning to come back to this since BOST and it showing up in Glacier's topic reminded me to check it out again.

yay go my koshiro. lead synths lack a bit of power. ok random synth solo. now guitar!
Score: 762
Definitely was not expecting this, but I actually like the original better (or whatever the version was that got nominated before)! The instruments in this one just lack the oomph and the power that I think this song really needs. It also feels like it's missing some bass to round out the low end. Solos are always cool, though they kinda felt like they came out of nowhere in this one, no buildup! The melodic elements are still there for me to enjoy, so I don't mind listening to this version either.
