the series is still immensely popular within the bubble of, like, anime subreddits and other anime discussion hubs.

but yeah it was building up to be a hit among more widespread, casual audiences and then... as you mentioned... the hiatus between season 1 and season 2 killed a lot of the hype surrounding it. still one of the greatest manga of our generation, and the anime has done a really good job adapting it.

season 1 in particular is a standout achievement as far as adaptations go. it stayed really faithful to the source material while adding scenes that augmented the original story. there's only one REALLY questionable change. they restructured some of the events into a more linear and cohesive fashion so the story would be easier to understand. and the absolute level of animation, music, voice acting, etc. speaks for itself. there's a reason all of that hype was built around the series initially.
