Call attention to whatever it is they're trying to avoid by putting the attention on you, because there is something. Avoiding it usually doesn't work unless you're out of the situation quickly. If you're older, using a direct but condescending tone works well. Also you might have to fight them but that's usually not as bad as being bullied. Unless they're in a gang, or something.
