A tends to be the most used button, which is closer to the stick in the Wii U Pro layout. Less travel distance there. You can nudge up on it without even leaving the A button, and pulling down you'll be right above it

Stick on the bottom means extending your thumb at a wider angle, stretching your thumb's muscles more than the Wii U Pro layout. You get less range of movement and more fatigue with that

That's still not optimal. A properly laid out control scheme would not make a person have to contort their hands to perform a common action that requires the use of both the right stick and face button, period. There are 4 shoulder buttons as well as the clicking the stick for a total of 5 possibilities that would allow one to use the stick and press a button at the same time.
