Let's assume for a second that he is telling the truth, it makes him look really bad in 2 ways. Instead of being able to get games for free, he now is begging hard for them. But he refused because of some kind of moral superiority, but that moral superiority apparently does cover begging. I really don't get Phil. Either it's the truth, and it makes him look bad instead of good (good guy Phil doesn't feel better than his audience, but does beg for games).
