If it's an open scene, and routing the enemy isn't required, sleep is sometimes a nice alternative. Otherwise, petrification tends to fill the "defeat enemy" condition nicely. If the enemy is more dangerous, and absolutely must die, slow is a nice one for making dangerous enemies more manageable. If it's not especially dangerous, but more of a meat shield, yeah, a way to get through its defenses is ideal.
