Labour made gains in 2017 primarily due to May's gross unpopularity combined with UKip more or less completely collapsing. You can see in the chart below that their gains were almost entirely at the expense of other parties. And those gains were basically a recovery of what they lost from Milbrand, not any significant change in the status quo.

Their biggest problem right now is identity. Corbyn brought in a ton of new, young Labour voters whose positions on issues were fairly strongly different from older members, and Corbyn never quite figured out how to resolve that issue. It's why he waffled so hard on Brexit (because his own party was split on the issue), and why a number of high profile, long-time members have been leaving recently. As Sir Patrick Stewart said when he quit Labour after being a member for 70 years, he "finds it difficult to understand what Labour really stands for or what it represents right now".
