it's just classism. classism from people who want to feel like they're better than others for arbitrary reasons and shaming people for things that's actually COMMON amongst Americans.

you're struggling and your kids REALLY need it, but you were taught that it was weak and shameful to ask for "handouts" from a government that TAKES. and since they've built a toxic image of what it means to be a "man," they'd rather let their family struggle just to say "hah, I never asked for help! my daddy struggled, his daddy struggled and his daddy struggled! but we turned out alright!"

in middle school I was the type of asshole that would make fun of kids getting the free lunch program, but for many kids, they didn't get to eat at all that day unless they went to school. being poor was always seen as a joke and even other poor kids would rag on those seen as MORE poor than they.

we get indoctrinated into bullshit ideologies and demonize each other, but at some point we need to separate ourselves from the nonsense we were taught so we can stop adding to it.
