Because both games had similar goals but progressed in different ways as development happened. Terraria is not foremost a "creative" game. If you play it like that you're not going to enjoy it as much as if you played it like an adventure game.

It's like people say Terraria is a bad game but they've never killed the Wall of Flesh (or did so with a party). You're fundamentally playing the game wrong, because you think it's Minecraft when it's not.

I don't disagree - but I think it's a problem exacerbated by the fact that 90% of the people praising Terraria or encouraging other people to play it early on tended to emphasize the things that it had in common with Minecraft, and presented it more in that light, which then caused the backlash from people who went in expecting Minecraft who didn't get Minecraft.

As for saying it's a bad game, I think people are fully entitled to say that before fighting the Wall of Flesh. I think they're entitled to say it even if the only thing they've ever really fought was the Eye of Cthulhu, or even just zombies. As long as what they're essentially saying is "This is a bad game from the perspective of what I want out of games."

Some people love Dark Souls. To me it's a shit game because it offers absolutely nothing of what I want out of games and multiple things I never want out of games. The greatest platformer in the entire history of gaming is going to be mostly crap to me, because I no longer enjoy platformers. And so on.

For me personally, Terraria is attempting to scratch an itch I don't have, is asking me to do things I have no interest in doing, and ultimately offers rewards I neither want nor value. It doesn't really matter how much of the game I play - I'm never going to like Terraria.

And that's fine. Someone who loves the game can love it without my dislike for it somehow making their enjoyment less (unless they've got other problems, but that's on them, not me). No one is saying you can't enjoy the thing you enjoy just because there are people who don't enjoy it. Nor are people wrong for not enjoying it - there are tons of games, and tons of people who play games, and different people will gravitate to different genres and game types, and will enjoy different things.
