I think a lot of the problem with rock's general popularity is the gatekeeping and exclusion that goes on. I think there's been an attempt for experimentation, genre-melding, and pushing rock to new limits, like with Twenty One Pilots, Ghost, or Bring Me the Horizon, but I often see many people all to eager to disqualify these acts from being true "rock" for daring to go in even a little bit of a hip hop or pop direction. The recent Highly Suspect album is another example. Still, there's been a lot of popular hip hop artists incorporating rock into their music, since we're kind of getting the first wave of people who grew up in the late 90s/early 00s and got big now, who were listening to grunge, alt. rock, pop punk and nu metal while they were growing up.
