The reality is that business model of trying to build all the costs into a single one-off upfront payment doesn't last. It creates the wrong incentive structure and focuses too heavily on the short term with no real incentive to maintain the long term. Shareholders tend to hate this model as well since it just means you need to use future sales from new products to cover the costs of supporting earlier sales. (for those technical accountants out there, yes I'm aware of disaggregating components of revenue to match future costs but it's still not popular to have no ongoing revenue stream but ongoing costs) --- If you can understand this, I'm 2/cosC for you. ...
