What's important is a loyalty to the content and tone of the source material.
This. Is it too much to ask for the people involved to familiarize themselves with the source material? Or else we'll get another Dragon Ball Evolution disaster, where I'm convinced not a soul on that crew ever watched a single episode of Dragon Ball.

The writer of Evolution came out with an apology a few years ago. He acknowledged that he knew almost nothing about Dragon Ball and took the job for an easy paycheck. He admitted that he didn't think twice about the fans of the original series. ( https://www.forbes.com/sites/olliebarder/2016/05/05/dragonball-evolution-writer-apologizes-to-fans/#623bd8622e67 )

On the flip side, the actor who played Piccolo did everything he could to make it good. James Marsters is the guy, and he is the only reason Piccolo was even green in that movie. He actually knew and cared about Dragon Ball, and when you watch the movie, he seems to be the only one who puts in any effort. He also went on to be the dub voice of Zamasu in Dragon Ball Super, and he does a phenomenal job of it.

Two different examples of people who worked on the same project. One had to apologize, the other returned to work on the series again and did his very best to make it work. We need more from column B, and way less from column A.
