Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Game of Thrones, etc. Anyway, I think it's because the setting is considerably easier to work with than a modern one. Also, this is Fire Emblem, a strategy JRPG series that's been around since 1991, so they really shouldn't be called out on this.
