Sir Humphry made a bit of a mess of naming this new element, at first spelling it alumium (this was in 1807) then changing it to aluminum, and finally settling on aluminium in 1812.

You have to look into that deeper, google only gave you the cliff note on it. Which is only half true.

All the metals past 1811 were renamed because Berzelius proposed they they add um or ium at the end of metallic elements to match the Latin names (for some reason).
Then what happened was Davy called it Aluminum, but his colleague preferred Aluminium because everything else he named ended with "ium".
