Dirt Poor Robins

Welcome to Lady Hell: It's well performed in all respects, but I'm not crazy about the lyrics or the story. It's somehow both very close to what I want and very far away at the same time? Hell Prison seems like what I want--despair, potentially supernatural if we're assuming it's literal hell instead of figurative hell (and I don't know enough about the story to be particularly sure, so I'm presently free to interpret it however I wish), yadda yadda yadda, but like The Dark Sentencer this kinda...left out the despair? It's so upbeat that it can't really work on that level; but it's also...ya know...not happy enough to work on that level either? Not sure what I'd want to score it as... probably around a 7 out of respect for the group's talent and for it being in the vacinity of what I wanted.

Furthest Star: I know this isn't one of the four songs I was supposed to listen, but it started immediately after the last one and I was drawn into it by the opening notes. This is one of those songs where as soon as the intro started, I was like 'yeah, we're dropping everything to listen to this right now'. There's a dark edge to the music and his voice that I find irrestible... this would likely get "9.Something" for a score, with the Something to be determined at a later point when I had more data points on nominated songs to better decide exactly where I'd want to place it.

Maximilian Von Spee: ...Huh. Going directly from the last two songs to an incredibly retro song about a WW1 General...brain...melting...

It's good, but I'd prefer something a bit more modern and I'm not really in the mood for a history lesson right now, though there are definitely days I'd be more appreciative of this song serving as a jumping on point to learning something. Probably around a 6 at the moment, with a note that it'd likely rise to an 8 if you caught me in a more academic mood.

Scarecrows: You know how a lot of high ranking songs tended to get generic messages of "[*insert large number here* Nothing to say tonight, I'll try to find something when I have to talk about this a few months from now]"? This would be one of those. 9-ish, good, but I can't find any specific words that I want to put down here tonight.

But Never a Key: I'm surprised by how many of the YouTube comments are people that fail to understand the Algernon reference. Like, even if you never read the story, then surely you have to be aware of it, right? It's been retold and parodied in everything from Spider-Man to Newsradio. Not that I'm in a position to judge anyone, I just kinda thought everyone at least knew the name and gist of the story.

Aaanywho, the song is...depressing, obviously. Which is rather what I asked for, I suppose. I like it, but it's very slow and somber... probably start at an 8, then steadily increase overtime as I have to admit how much I was undervaluing it. It feels inevitable that this would ultimately go up to a 9.5, but we're not at that point yet.
