The idea of a reformed storm trooper rebelling against the evil empire is, like you said, a perspective we haven't seen in Star Wars (at least the main movies; it's probably been done a dozen times in the EU). There was so much potential to tell a cool story with Finn, and they pissed it away immediately by making him useless comic relief.
