They came in just at the height of that trend, player to its core audience, and fell off as it died. They were very much the MCR/Panic emo kids from South Park (not to be confused with GOTH). Urie is very talented if you catch him outside of any of his latest albums. Can really sing and dance and knows his music. Pretty much this.
