Pop rock pop pop punk baroque pop synth-pop alternative rock emo pop

I would say Emo Pop. They came in just at the height of that trend, player to its core audience, and fell off as it died. They were very much the MCR/Panic emo kids from South Park (not to be confused with GOTH).

Urie is very talented if you catch him outside of any of his latest albums. Can really sing and dance and knows his music.

Pretty much this. Their debut album is much different from their later work

They're not punk but they're also not any one genre. Every album is totally different. Only A Fever You Cant Sweat Out was a typical pop rock emo thing.

i always thought they were emo

They are not emo. Emo is a genre from the 80's to 90's across music and fashion. MCR (and later Panic!) was specifically a response to the emo trend and much more pop, as opposed to rock, angsty and depressed as opposed to optimistic. When you think emo, think your least favorite Weezer songs and AFI style.

Panic! is pop emo. A mainstream reaction to emo counter-coulture. Emo came out of the "divorce epidemic" from while Gen X was in school as a literally emotional rock movement, it intersected with grunge and goth culture. Emo pop is post-911, post-internet, with millennials in school.

There's nothing "emo" about patd. They're not even a derivative of a derivative. There's zero ties to the genre in any way.
